The Hook (Intro)
Have you ever noticed a confused look on a Japanese person’s face when you greet them?
In almost every Japanese textbook, the first phrase you learn is "Ogenki desu ka?" (How are you?). Naturally, you want to use it! But here’s the truth: if you say this to your colleagues or friends every single morning, it actually sounds a bit strange. In Japan, "Ogenki desu ka" is usually reserved for people you haven’t seen in a long time—like a letter to an old friend or a formal business email.
What should you say instead?
To sound like a local, you need to match the situation. Here are three "Real Japanese" alternatives:
At Work: "Otsukaresama-desu" (お疲れ様です) This is the magic phrase. It’s used for "Hello," "Goodbye," and "Thank you for your hard work." If you see a coworker in the hallway, this is the go-to greeting.
With Friends: "Saikin do?" (最近どう?) This is the equivalent of "How’s it going lately?" It’s casual, friendly, and much more natural for catching up with buddies.
The Weather Hack: "Atsui desu ne" (暑いですね) In Japan, commenting on the weather is the ultimate icebreaker. "It’s hot, isn't it?" or "It’s cold, isn't it?" is often the most polite and natural way to start a conversation with neighbors or shopkeepers.
The Osaka Twist
Since I’m based in Osaka, I have to share a bit of local flavor! Osaka is known as the "City of Business." Old-school shop owners here sometimes greet each other with: "Mokari-makka?" (儲かりまっか?) — Are you making a profit? To which the standard reply is: "Mochi-mochi ya" (ぼちぼちや) — So-so, keeping busy.
(Maybe don't use this in Tokyo, or they’ll be really surprised!)
